Will there be folks who are more likely to tune in because of a formally A-list movie starring showing up in a cable TV action show? Sure. Will there be folks who react to this casting by choosing not to watch The Continental? Sure. So itвЂ™s not a shock that heвЂ™d end up on a Lionsgate television show. The film was distributed by Lionsgate, the studio which distributed several of GibsonвЂ™s films theatrically or via VOD over the last several years. The old-school Hollywood war epic fits right in with much of GibsonвЂ™s directorial filmography ( Man Without A Face, The Passion of the Christ, Apocalypto) concerning men of peace being tested in times of great (justified) violence, which is why I never thought heвЂ™d actually make that Wild Bunch remake. The World War II picture, starring Andrew Garfield as a consciousness objector who nonetheless served sans firearm as a battle medic and won a Medal of Honor for his life-saving efforts, was nominated for Best Actor, Best Picture and Best Director while winning Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing at the 2017 Academy Awards. The one recent exception was Hacksaw Ridge, which he directed (but did not act in) to critical acclaim, strong box office ($181 million on a $40 million budget) and several high-end Oscar nominations. Nor is being cast as a villain mostly for a punchline in the likes of DaddyвЂ™s Home 2, Expendables 3 and Machete Kills. The likes of Get the Gringo, Blood Father, Dragged Across Concrete or Force of Nature arenвЂ™t exactly on par with headlining big-budget A-level Hollywood star vehicles. Yes, Gibson has remained somewhat busy since his late-2006 drunk driving arrest (during which he spouted off anti-Semitic insults and related conspiracy theories), but truthfully most of his work at least since the early 2010s (following Martin CampbellвЂ™s terrific Edge of Darkness remake and Jodie FosterвЂ™s flawed-but-fascinating The Beaver) has been in the realm of straight-to-VOD grindhouse action movies. As for the obviously controversial GibsonвЂ™s participation, itвЂ™s not a huge surprise. Considering the potential for a non-serialized, old-school television show offering random stories of murder and mayhem happening in and around the hotel, the three-part вЂњorigin storyвЂќ route is a little underwhelming, even if it is a backdoor pilot that may yet spawn a conventional series.
